I have created a lot of pastel pieces in this style lately. I've kept the most detail around the parts that I believe are the most important, and let the pastel strokes show through in other areas for more artistic expression. I believe this mixed style of realism and a little bit of impressionism works well with animal subjects because it helps keep the focus on the face/eyes (or wherever I want the viewer to look). I love the way this style helps express the overall feeling of the piece.
